A very thought-provoking reddit.

Op-Ed Columnist – The Rage Is Not About Health Care – NYTimes.com

2010/03/28 Leave a comment
Demographics are avatars of a change bigger than any bill contemplated by Obama or Congress. The week before the health care vote, The Times reported that births to Asian, black and Hispanic women accounted for 48 percent of all births in America in the 12 months ending in July 2008. By 2012, the next presidential election year, non-Hispanic white births will be in the minority. The Tea Party movement is virtually all white. The Republicans haven’t had a single African-American in the Senate or the House since 2003 and have had only three in total since 1935. Their anxieties about a rapidly changing America are well-grounded.

So, it turns out that they’re right after all. I’ve stayed away from the HCR debate mainly because it seems so firmly planted in the minds of unreasonable men. But the TeePee’s desire to take the country back is right on, just not in the way it’s been portrayed. Given the HCR bill’s role as the line in the sand everyone has picked sides upon, there’s going to be a lot more rhetoric.

Book Flipping Scanning using high speed (500fps) camera to scan 200 pages in one minute

Someone just needs to set one of these up at the Library of Congress and digitize everything for posterity. Ideally, they need a way to do this without much interaction from a person or the book. You don’t want to flip through historical archival texts like a picture book.

What’s the future hold for Palm and webOS?

2010/03/18 Leave a comment
It's all about the developers.

Getting developers interested is always the challenge, and Palm has neither the userbase of the iPhone nor the cachet of Android. A lot of interesting apps are only afterthoughts on webOS, if available at all.  I'm looking at you Yelp, Buzz, Waze among others.  Given fixed resources, I can see how a shop would choose to ignore webOS even with all its developer-friendliness.  After all, you have to monetize eventually.  Part of me really wishes that Palm would have stuck to its guns and implemented an improved version of their original web-based SDK.  By the time they followed Apple's lead and gave in to pressure to releasing their proprietary PDK with native access, it may be too late to get mindshare.

I suspect MS will have similar problems with their Windows Phone 7 platform.  Trying to get adoption of Yet Another Development Platform (.NET, Silverlight) will be tough on the mobile developers.  At least they have the influence (and money) of Microsoft behind them.  Palm and webOS will get pushed another rung down the viability ladder.

I really like a lot of features of webOS including their multitasking model and the Synergy contact aggregation model.  They really need to focus and pick a plan and execute.  That's what Apple did so well, driven by the cult of personality that is Steve Jobs.  This haphazard featureset that get released with each successive OS upgrade (Gain video editing, but no audio capture?) reeks of an unfocused team approach of "going after the low-hanging fruit" instead of executing a well designed plan.  They're trying to appeal to consumer and enterprise and geekdom with the same device and platform.

Bill Cosby once said "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody."

Health vs. Pork: Congress Debates the Farm Bill (I wonder what @jamie_oliver thinks about this)

This is a little old but still very relevant. Frightening but relevant especially in today’s economy. Why are we still subsidizing millionaire farmers?
